All coaches, trainers, team managers, on-ice and off-ice volunteers require specific certifications in order to be rostered to a team or assist as a on/off ice volunteer in order to be covered by the Hockey Canada insurance program.

Volunteers must be at least two years older than the age limit of the division in which they are volunteering.

All volunteers must be registered as a volunteer with the WSMHA and complete the required qualifications by November 30 in order to participate with on-ice activities and apply for certification reimbursement.

On-Ice Volunteer Equipment Requirements & Restrictions

  • CSA certified helmet, skates, gloves must be worn. Volunteers 14 years and older are eligible to wear the same equipment as on-ice team volunteers.
  • Volunteers younger than 14 years are required to wear full player equipment including neck and mouth guard.
  • Helmet straps must be firmly attached at all times while on the ice.
  • can participate in IP Instruction and team practices, can not participate in team games.

Hockey Canada Registry (HCR) profile

In order to take any online courses, a HCR profile is required. When trying to register for a course and your name can not be found, chances are you do not have a profile. Fill in the HCR Profile Request Form and the hockey office will create a profile for you. Do not try and take any courses before the profile is created. Your HCR number will be sent to you as soon as the profile is ready. While you are waiting for the profile, you can apply for the Vulnerable Sector Screening from York Region Police. Head Coach requires Development 1 Certified
Assistant Coach requires Development 1 Trained

Coaches with an expiring Coach 2 - Coach Level CERTIFIED or Development 1 CERTIFIED qualification can renew their qualification through the NCCP Certification Maintenance process.

Team Trainer Requirements

To be eligible to be a trainer or assistant trainer on any team registered with the OMHA, The person must have the on-ice volunteer requirements stated above as well as the Hockey Trainers Ontario Online Course. The age requirement for a Head Trainer and Assistant Trainer is a minimum of 19 years of age and a minimum of 4 years older than the division age limit of the team for which they are Trainer. The HTCP Level I program is valid for 3 seasons including the season of issue. Requalification is required after the 3rd season.
