HEAD COACH - MATT TRAUB
Coaching Philosophy & Approach to Skill Development
I’m excited to be back with the Stouffville Clippers and looking forward to another successful season!
I believe in creating a positive, engaging, and structured environment where young athletes can grow both on and off the ice. My coaching philosophy is centered on fostering a passion for the game while emphasizing the importance of hard work, team dynamics, and individual growth. My focus is on developing not only technical skills but also mental toughness, resilience, and sportsmanship.
A key component of my approach is emphasizing individual skill development, including skating mechanics, puck handling, passing, and shooting. I understand that success at higher levels begins with a solid foundation, and I aim to build these foundational skills while challenging players to push their limits and elevate their performance in a constructive and positive environment.
Goals for the upcoming season
For the upcoming season, my primary goal is to develop a cohesive and hardworking team that can compete at the highest level of U11 AA hockey while having FUN. I aim to ensure that every player improves their individual skills, enhances their hockey IQ, and contributes to team success. There will be a focus on creating a positive team culture where players hold each other accountable and learn to support one another both on and off the ice.
I am committed to providing a balanced approach, offering opportunities for individual growth while encouraging teamwork and communication. My ultimate goal is for each player to leave the season with an increased love for the game and a deeper understanding of what it means to be a part of a team and how this translates into becoming successful in future endeavors both on the ice and away from the rink.
Hockey Background
I have an extensive hockey background, with experience both on the ice and behind the bench. My journey in the sport has been diverse, ranging from playing at competitive levels to gaining invaluable experience as an linesman and referee in both the AHL (American Hockey League) and the OHL (Ontario Hockey League). I have been fortunate enough to have been selected to officiate in the World Junior Championship/Memorial Cups/Calder Cup playoffs/Men’s World Championship/U18 World Championship and other international and national Championships, giving me a global perspective on the game and an understanding of the skill level required to perform at the highest levels of hockey.
My experience as a player and official has allowed me to see the game from a unique perspective, providing me with an in-depth understanding of skating mechanics, skill development, game flow, rules and the importance of discipline. This experience translates into my coaching style, where I emphasize not only skill development but also the importance of understanding the game’s nuances and maintaining composure in all situations.
My background has shaped me into a coach who values integrity, accountability, and hard work, and I strive to impart these values on my players, helping them grow into well-rounded individuals both on and off the ice.
