Clippers Hold the Line in Tight Contest with Waxers
In our final regular season play with the Waxers, our scaled back Clipper squad earned the 2-2 TIE against the Waxers, in spite of some tough breaks in penalty assignments.
The Clippers took the first goal at 9:20 of the first with Gibbons (#18) taking advantage of a loose puck at the net, assisted by Messner (#2). As the Clippers were unable to capitalize on the first power play of the game (awarded in the first minute of play of the second), the score remained 1-0 at the close of the first.
As the play battled on, the Waxers had their first power play chance at 7:08 of the second on a weak tripping call... followed shortly by another surprising roughing call, giving the opponents a 5 on 3 advantage for the longest minute and twenty six seconds of the season. The Clippers braved through this battle, keeping the 1 point lead. While the team staved off the offensive onslaught through the 5 on 3, the Waxers managed to even it up at 3:55 of the second. The determined Clippers regained their one point lead with much gusto and flare as Brown (#11) carried the puck in and around the Waxer defense, and managed a goal at 1:45, assisted by von Kaufmann (#12) and Gibbons (#18).
This would have been a comfortable end to the second, but with 14 seconds to spare, the Clippers lost another defenseman to a "CFB" as two skaters raced for the puck on the boards and ending in a collision and a GM called on the Clippers. Already missing a key defenseman and playing a short bench, this call really hit the team hard. The third period opened with the Waxers taking advantage of the power play with the tie goal at 13:21. The remainder of the third showed some fatigue setting in, but demonstrated many rallies by the inspired Clippers, and one more successful penalty kill following an interference call against the hometown team.
The Clippers played a strong game and produced a number of scoring chances throughout the play. Strategic play was evident, and while it was not executed with perfection, the effort was there and the passing and positioning play was clearly showing itself in the power plays and breakouts.
Well done Clippers and Clipper Coaches!!! It was a great game to watch. Your fans applaud you!
