First indoor hockey game
On March 3, 1875, the first recorded indoor ice hockey game took place at the
Victoria Skating Rink in
Montreal,
Canada. Organized by
James Creighton, who also captained one of the teams, the game was between two nine-member teams, using a wooden 'puck'. Members used skates and sticks used for outdoor hockey and shinny games in
Nova Scotia, where Creighton was born and raised.

The fight did not occur during the game, or even between the two opposing teams. Apparently it was between the players and spectators and the members of the skating club that were not pleased that their ice time was being taken away, and that the hockey players were chewing up their ice surface!
