New Initiation Program for 4-6 year olds
The WSMHA is excited to announce an entire redesign
of our Initiation Program, making it a stronger, more consistent program for
every child.
Goal: Teach the FUNdamentals of Hockey
to 4-6 year olds.
Focus:
Learning Agility, Balance and Coordination (ABC's) in a fun atmosphere.
Design: Individual practice plans for
EVERY practice at all 3 levels, increasing in difficulty throughout the season
and adding additional skills at each level.
Structure:
Warm Up, Fundamental Demonstration, Station based drills, Game or Scrimmage.
Resources: Hockey Canada and Pro Smart Hockey
Implementation: - all coaches will be emailed a weekly practice plan with 2 key fundamentals, instructions for the drill at each station and a video to help teach them - new on ice teaching aids.
Mandatory on ice training session for all Head and Assistant Coaches, optional for Trainers (Thursday, October 4 at 6pm at Clippers / mark your calendars) - Dedicated coaches mentor In the past, this type of training has only been available to more rep/competitive players who made it through a tryout onto a development team. We have decided to instead, offer the same opportunities to all our players this season. This is in line with Hockey Canada's move away from competitive play at these levels. Rep teams will begin at Tyke (2011 birth year).
We have attached the Parent's handbook for this season and will also be holding an information session on the new program on Tuesday Sept 11th at 7pm in the 9th line Arena multipurpose room upstairs.
